Telecommunications in WA

Western Australia is a challenging State for the provision of telecommunications with its vast distances and sparse population in regional areas.

Rapid changes in communications technology over the past ten years, such as the development of broadband and wireless technologies, present tremendous new opportunities for economic and social prosperity.

Western Australian telecommunications carriers and internet service providers are often at the leading edge of introducing new and improved services for customers.

As at 31 March 2008, 247 carrier licences had been issued by the Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA).  Telstra (http://www.telstra.com/) and Optus (http://www.optus.com.au/) are the two largest carriers in Australia, and ones which would be very familiar.  Western Australian based carriers include:

  • Amcom Pty Ltd (http://www.amnet.com.au/) – Amcom has an extensive fibre network and offers internet services as Amnet
  • Chime Communications Pty Ltd (http://www.iinet.net.au/) –  iiNet is the third largest internet service provider in Australia
