Key Strengths and Capabilities of WA's Marine and Defence Industry

Western Australia (WA) welcomes the expansion of trade and technology transfer with its global partners.

WA has considerable expertise in marine, defence and information and communication technologies (ICT).  As Australia's largest commercial shipbuilding precinct, the shipbuilding precinct in the Australian Marine Complex produced vessels valued in excess of A$2.0 billion in the last decade. Some 95% of these vessels were built for demanding export markets.

WA also supplies around a quarter of the international market for lightweight, high-speed ferries. These vessels are produced in the 15 -110 metre range, catering for a wide range of uses including vehicle and troop transport.

Stirling Naval Base and the Australian Marine Complex are two significant examples of infrastructure located in Western Australia to service the marine and defence and offshore petroleum industries.

WA's marine and defence industries offer a range of distinctive benefits, including a highly skilled workforce and advanced production techniques, superior design capability and technology, highly efficient world-class productivity, and a proven reputation for quality and delivery on-time and on-budget.

WA has a world-competitive ICT industry focused on developing hardware and software solutions that will service the global knowledge economy. Coupled with the State’s strong marine vessel and infrastructure construction capabilities, Western Australian companies are capable partners for the provision of integrated solutions for the marine and defence sector.

A number of companies are currently seeking to develop commercial relationships worldwide.
